The turn for home in the Premier League is very much upon us, with the table congesting nicely at both ends of it. Manchester City have their title destiny in their own hands but once again, they will need to play catch up, as Arsenal have the points on the board above them. Liverpool now look set for 3rd place, with Aston Villa and Tottenham scrapping for the final Champions League spot in the top 4. Down at the bottom of the pile, Burnley look to be mounting a great escape, now that Sheffield United have officially been relegated. Meaning it will be 2 of 3 from the Clarets, Luton Town or Nottingham Forest that drop back into the Championship next season.
With the stakes at an all-time high, it promises to be another massive week of Premier League action in game week 36.
2023/24 Premier League GW35 Recap:
West Ham United 2 – 2 Liverpool Liverpool looked to have finally said goodbye to their title dream, as they dropped points again, this time at West Ham United. Jarred Bowen headed the Irons into a deserved lead and whilst Liverpool hit back through Andy Robertson and an Alphonso Areola own goal, Michail Antonio salvaged a point for the Hammers.
Fulham 1 – 1 Crystal Palace Two sides meandering towards the end of the campaign met in an entertaining clash on the Thames, as Fulham and Crystal Palace shared the points. Rodrigo Muniz continued his good form to put Fulham ahead, but Jeffrey Schlupp’s stunner bagged a point for Palace late on.
Manchester United 1 – 1 Burnley The problems continue to mount for Manchester United, who were held to a 1-1 draw by battling Burnley. Missed chances looked set to haunt the visitors, as Anthony pounced on sloppy play to put United ahead, but a late Zeki Amdouni penalty earned Burnley a deserved point.
Newcastle United 5 – 1 Sheffield United Sheffield United were officially relegated, following their 5-1 thumping by Newcastle at St James’s Park. Anel Ahmedhodzic actually put the Blades into the lead but goals from Aleksander Isak (x2), Bruno Guimares, Callum Wilson and a Ben Osborn own goal sealed Sheffield United’s EPL fate.
Wolves 2 – 1 Luton Town Relegation pressure continues to mount on Luton Town, who succumbed to a 2-1 loss at Wolves. The hosts were in control thanks to goals either side of half time from Hwang Hee-chan and Toti Gomes and whilst Carlton Morris pulled one back for Luton, it was too little, too late for the Hatters.
Everton 1 – 0 Brentford Everton secured their Premier League status, with a hard-fought win over Brentford at Goodison Park. Idrissa Gueye smashed home the winner, as the Toffees ensured they would be playing top-flight football again in 2024/25.
Aston Villa 2 – 2 Chelsea Top 4 chasing Aston Villa threw away a 2-goal lead against Chelsea, as the two sides settled for a draw at Villa Park. The hosts were in control thanks to Marc Cucurella’s own goal and a Morgan Rogers strike, but Chelsea never gave up hope and bagged a deserved point through late Noni Madueke and Conor Gallagher goals.
Bournemouth 3 – 0 Brighton The end of the season can’t come quick enough for Brighton, who were thumped 3-0 by south coast rivals Bournemouth. Goals from Marcos Senesi, Enes Unal and Justin Kluivert were enough to seal a big win for the impressive Cherries.
Tottenham 2 – 3 Arsenal A classic North London derby ensued at Tottenham, with Arsenal picking up a potentially crucial win. The Gunners were 3-0 to the good thanks to goals from Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz and a Pierre Emile Hojberg own goal but Tottenham gave them a fright through Christian Romero and a Son Heung-min penalty but Arsenal deservedly held on for the win.
Nottingham Forest 0 – 2 Manchester City Champions Manchester City showed their resolve, digging deep to win at Nottingham Forest. Goals from Josko Gvardiol and Erling Haaland sealed an important win for City, who have their title destiny in their own hands.
Clashes at the top of the table will come to the fore this weekend, as Arsenal take on Bournemouth in the early kick off, before Manchester City look to respond against Wolves in the evening game.
Struggling Luton Town host Everton, whilst Burnley take on Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest travel to already relegated Sheffield United, fixtures that could all have a huge impact on who stays in the division this season.
